The NAACP Image Awards 2019, held at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday (March 30) and hosted by Anthony Anderson, brought out some of Hollywood’s most notable stars. Beyonce, Yara Shahidi, and Marsai Martin were three of many in attendance at the ceremony.
Black-ish won big at this year’s NAACP Image Awards with the Outstanding Comedy Series Award. The show was matched against Atlanta, Grown-ish, Insecure, and Dear White People. Grown-ish is actually a spin-off of Black-ish with Yara Shahidi’s character that gives viewers an insight into college life.
Yara recently explained how Hollywood has changed for the better in recent years. “We’re holding people accountable for their actions,” Shahidi told ELLE. “There’s an intentional knowledge disparity in any industry, which is tied to the maintaining of power. I love the fact that this community of women is disintegrating that. I’ve been able to reap the benefits of it, and I’m also fortunate to have my parents with me, guiding me.”
Speaking of changing the trajectory of things, Beyonce took home the NAACP Image Award for Entertainer of the Year. The singer’s husband, Jaz-Z, was given this year’s President Award. Michael B. Jordan, Lynn Whitfield, and Chadwick Boseman were also big winners at the NAACP Image Awards 2019. Both Boseman and Jordan won awards for their performances in Black Panther. Lynn Whitfield nabbed the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance on the hit series Greenleaf.
