TIA MOWRY: ‘WHETHER OR NOT YOU WANT TO ADDRESS RACISM WITH YOUR CHILDREN, YOU MUST’

"Ignorance Is Out There"

Tia Mowry is well aware that there are ignorant people in the world who try to shape other individuals to be closed-minded like themselves. Such is the reason why the celebrity mom has taken a proactive stance when it comes to racism and teaching her kids – Cree and Cairo – how to navigate in America while being children of African descent.

“Whether or not you want to address racism with your children, you must because ignorance is out there and they need to know how to handle it,” Tia shared in a recent op-ed for Romper. “Being a black mom, it’s very important for me to share my history with my kids,” Tia adds. “I not only want them to understand and know their culture but also to learn everything they can about other cultures.”

Mowry believes that having a limited perspective is the root cause of racism. Such is the reason why she takes her son, Cree, with her when traveling the world.

“when Cree is out of school, he travels everywhere with me,” Tia explains. “I want him to see there are other people in the world that don’t look and sound like you. I want him to be open-minded, educated, and understanding in how other cultures function both at home and around the world. Discrimination and hate speech are born out of a narrow-mindedness that only considers one way of living and doing things. My hope is for all people to become more open-minded about the way they see the world.”

Tia Mowry is fully aware of the negative effects of bigotry. She still believes in the power of love, though.

“Above all, I’m going to teach both my children to love unconditionally because, even though it sounds cliché, I truly believe that love wins,” The celebrity mom writes. “It always does.”
