Last night, Lifetime premiered its documentary series titled “Surviving R. Kelly,” which looks into the troubled singer’s life that the television network describes as “riddled with rumors of abuse, predatory behavior, and pedophilia.”
Lifetime promises that with over 50 interviews from ex-wife Andrea Kelly, musicians John Legend and Sparkle, talk-show host Wendy Williams, his brothers Carey and Bruce Kelly, and many others, the story of R. Kelly’s controversial life will be revealed in the six-part docuseries.
Kelly’s legal team has denied the reports and information within the documentary, but that hasn’t stopped fans from taking to the internet to inquire about the R&B star’s life. Many people would like to know, for example, how all of the allegations have affected R. Kelly’s kids. Below we answer some of your burning questions.
How many kids does R Kelly have ?
R. Kelly has three kids. Joann, his eldest, was born in 1998; Jay, born Jaya, was born in 2000; and his youngest, Robert Jr. a.k.a Little Rob, was born in 2002.
How long was Andrea Kelly married to R Kelly ?
Kelly and Andrea married in 1996. The couple were married for 13 years before finalizing their divorce in 2009. It was R. Kelly’s second marriage. In 1994, a 27-year-old R. Kelly married 15-year-old singer Aaliyah in a secret ceremony. The couple were married for a few months before annulling their marriage.
Has any of the allegations affected his children?
In 2002, R. Kelly was indicted after a video surfaced and allegedly showed him engaging in sexual acts with a 14-year-old. The child pornography charges were later dropped after both Kelly and the young girl denied that it was them in the video. Ever since that incident, Andrea says that her kids have been haunted by the case.
“My children have had to deal with kids telling them, ‘Your daddy is the guy who peed on people,’” she says, “and it’s ongoing.”
