“I definitely had to forgive you and daddy for that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing,” Willow revealed while talking at the table. “It was mostly daddy because he was so harsh at certain times,” the young star continued. “It was a couple of years, honestly. Trying to regain trust for not feeling like I was being listened to or like no one cared how I felt.”

Willow Smith has been quite vocal about her sudden rise to fame that came as a result of her smash-hit single, ‘Whip My Hair.’ The young star even shared her battle with suicidal ideation that came along with the pressure of having so much fame at such a young age.

Some of the pressure was definitely from the public sphere as individuals in society tend to characterize entertainers as nothing short of modern day heroes. Much of the struggle, however, was internal as Will Smith tells Haute Living that he was once a drill sergeant of the sort to his family.

“[I] secretly call [2012] the year of the mutiny,” the celebrity father says of the tumultuous time between him and Willow Smith. “And 2012 was really the year that my family rejected the direction of my leadership. And that was the main thing that happened,” Smith further explains.

“Willow was really the first person during ‘Whip My Hair’ that decided she didn’t want to do what I said,” Will shares. “She really tested me,” the star father adds. “She was like, no she didn’t want to. She was done with ‘Whip My Hair.’ She was done with performing, and as a protest, she shaved her head bald. That was really the first time that I realized that my family wasn’t happy with the direction that I was taking them.”

Will Smith and Willow Smith were able to work through the tough times to ultimately get to a healthy place in their relationship. Now, Willow is a recording artist who puts out music on her terms. Stay tuned for more celebrity family news. Catch the latest episodes of Red Table Talk on Facebook!
