Jada Pinkett-Smith was shocked, to say the least, to learn of her daughter Willow Smith’s struggles that led to the teen cutting herself. The celebrity mom delves into the moment that her daughter revealed the dangerous practice.
“I wanted to make sure she was OK,” Jada tells The MOMS podcast. “We went through what happened, and in the moment I realized, as a mother you also have to give your children space to deal with their own shadow.”
Willow Smith explained her reasoning behind cutting herself during a recent episode of Red Table Talk. “I would have to say I honestly feel like I lost my sanity at one point. It was after that whole ‘Whip My Hair’ thing and I had just stopped doing singing lessons and I was kind of just in this gray area of, ‘Who am I? Do I have a purpose? Is there anything I can do besides this?'” Willow took time away from show business to determine what she truly wanted in life. The young star even turned down a starring roll in Annie to remain dedicated to her quest.
The tenacity that Willow showed during one of her most difficult seasons in life is what Jada Pinkett-Smith is most proud of. “I focused more on how she got herself out versus what got her there,” the celebrity parent shares with The MOMS. “I was most proud about that she could share it in the way she did, which let me know she had come through in a major way that she could put it on the table like that.”
You can catch Jada, Willow, and Adrienne Banfield-Jones (Jada’s mother) putting it all on the table every week in their hit Facebook series, Red Table Talk. Stay tuned for more celebrity family news!
