Netflix has become known for their original content that at times tackles hard-hitting issues that others do not.
In their new original movie, Amateur, they are sticking true to their nature as story tellers, taking viewers on a journey as they tell the story of an eighth-grade basketball star, portrayed by Michael Rainey Jr., who learns about the dark side of the sports industry.
Although Amateur is not based on a true story, it sure seems like it is. Instead, the new movie is based on experiences that many young athletes encounter. From the scouts that lure them to offers of scholarships to prestigious universities and beyond, Ryan Koo captures the pure essence of what it is like to be a talented athlete on the rise.
“It’s a fascinating and treacherous world which often leaves big decisions in the hands of little kids,” Koo wrote in his Kickstarter campaign.
