Sulwe Is Her Name

This is so exciting! Lupita Nyong’o is writing a children’s book and she’s excited to share the details about her upcoming story with media.

“I am pleased to reveal that I have written a children’s book! It’s called Sulwe,” Lupita shared with her Instagram fans. “Sulwe is a dark-skinned girl who goes on a starry-eyed adventure and awakens with a reimagined sense of beauty. She encounters lessons that we learn as children and spend our lives unlearning. This is a story for little ones, but no matter the age I hope it serves as an inspiration for everyone to walk with joy in their own skin.” We love it!

Lupita knows all too well about being comfortable in one’s skin. It was in 2014 that the star actress gave a moving speech about the importance of representation in Hollywood. “I hope that my presence on your screens and in magazines may lead you, young girl, on a similar journey,” she said during an awards ceremony. “That you will feel validation of your external beauty, but also, get to the deeper business of being beautiful inside.”

Lupita hopes that Sulwe reaches children between the ages of five to seven years of age. As she explains, “You learn all the things that you spend the rest of your life trying to unlearn [during this time].”

Sulwe makes its debut in January 2019! Catch Lupita Nyong’o in Black Panther when the film comes to theaters on February 16, 2018.
