Mahershala Ali and his wife, Amatus-Sami Karim, welcomed their daughter, Bari Najma Ali, in February. The little one came just days after his father and other cast members of Moonlight made history at the Academy Awards. Mahershala later described parenthood as “a different kind of crazy.” The actor did, however, admit that baby Bari slept through the night.
Raising an African-American child in the current racially charged climate is no easy feat. Mahershala, however, believes that the capacity to rise above current challenges is embedded in the American spirit.
“I sincerely believe we have the capacity to actually make this country great,” he tells Carvell Wallace of GQ. “There are enough people, there are enough believers out there, there are enough intelligent, empathetic souls out there that want good for the whole,” Ali adds. “I don’t know if it’ll happen in my lifetime,” he admits, “but I believe in time the pendulum will swing in the right direction.”
Mahershala Ali is the proud father of one child. The actor and his wife celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary this year.
