Walking the runway for Chanel, and Kanye West, in addition to posing for Calvin Klein and Beyonce’s Ivy Park label, have all been major resume accomplishments for model Selah Marley, who stands a non-traditional 5 feet 3 inches tall. The eighteen-year-old daughter of Lauren Hill and Rohan Marley is proving that petite is definitely in this season. Marley, who knew that she wanted to be a model at the age of eleven, sits down with Vogue.com and chats about walking for Kanye West and tells us who exactly are her fashion icons.
“I was like 11, in sixth grade, and I lived with my dad, so he was staying at the Gansevoort, near Times Square, and I told him, ‘Daddy, I want to be a model,'” the teen told the iconic fashion magazine. “He was with his girlfriend at the time, who was a model. He said. ‘All right, do the catwalk.’ So I did a little two-step for them!” And of course that two-step led Marley right out onto the runway, six years later, allowing her to make a name for herself outside of her famous family.
“This year I’ve actually been attending a lot of shows, I attended Coach, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, and that was dope,” she told Vogue.com. “I got to do a lot of photo pops and it was a new experience for me because I would walk out and there were paparazzi taking pictures of me. It was cool but definitely new to me.”
Recently, Marley also had the opportunity to walk for Yezzy Season 5 during New York Fashion Week. The young rising star said that, “most of [her] experience has been doing shoots, so doing Yeezy this season was really awesome. [She’s] glad that [she] got that chance; the clothes were amazing.”
So, just who are some of Marley’s fashion influences? Well, on her list of are of course Rihanna, Beyonce, and definitely mom, Lauren Hill. “I think my mom for one is incredibly fashionable,” she commented in her interview. “She’s the one who exposed me to the fashion world simply because of everything that she has. Our basement is literally like a museum of couture! It’s insane. I can go shopping down there, and I do.”
