Roxanne Roxanne, tells the story of Roxanne Shante Gooden, the girl rapper from the Queensbridge projects, who at the age of 14, in 1984, recorded “Roxanne’s Revenge” in response to U.T.F.O.’s “Roxanne, Roxanne”. Gooden became the face of a musical revolution that helped to put the female lyricist at the forefront of a male dominated world. In addition to Smith, Chante Adams portrays the role of Gooden in the film and Nia Long plays Ms. Peggy-Roxanne’s mother.
