Angela Simmons is taking parenthood one step at a time. The celebrity mom tells PEOPLE that becoming a mom is a learning experience in all forms.

“I just feel like you have to go day by day, really, with motherhood,” she says. “It’s all new and I don’t think there’s anything that can really prepare you — you have to step into it.”

Stepping into it for Angela means juggling life as a mom and future wife.  The celebrity is engaged to her son’s father, Sutton Tennyson Sr. “I’m still adjusting to motherhood, and then trying to plan the wedding at the same time … it’s a whole lot,” she admits.

Still, even with so much on her plate, Simmons manages to draw strength from her father’s example of parenting. “He just has it,” Angela says of Rev Run’s rearing practices. “He’s led by example.”

Rev Run has been basking in the joys of being a grandfather for the third time ever since Sutton Jr. made entry into the world. “He loves it,” Angela tells PEOPLE. “Number one, the baby has his middle name — Sutton Joseph Tennyson — my dad’s first name is [Sutton’s] middle name, so it’s a really cool thing.”

Angela Simmons and Sutton Tennyson Sr. welcomed their son in September. The little one is the couple’s first child together.
