Just call it a family affair! Beyonce, Jay Z, and Blue Ivy Carter wore Barbie themed costumes this Halloween.
Bey and Jay were Barbie and Ken. The celebrity couple went all out by taking pictures in life-sized Mattel boxes in addition to dressing as dolls. Beyonce was a beach babe while Jay-Z was the fortieth anniversary edition of Ken. Blue was the superstar of the family who took pictures outside of the box. The youngster showed off her blazer that bore the Barbie emblem on the back.
Mattel has been reaping the benefits from its decision to diversify the Barbie brand earlier this year. Sales rose by sixteen percent shortly after Mattel debuted dolls that represented various ethnic backgrounds and body builds. “These new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them,” Evelyn Mazzocco, global general manager for Barbie, said shortly after the new line’s release.
Kim Elsesser of UCLA also chimed in by saying, “Barbie creates norms for what’s beautiful. Barbie creates norms for what’s beautiful.” The positive feedback, as represented by increased sales, appears to be a sign that Mattel is going in the right direction.
Beyonce can certainly identify with body image and the unattainable standards that society imposes on women. It was just three years ago that the singer released a self-titled album that addressed sexuality, feminism, and marriage. “I was 195 pounds when I gave birth,” the singer said. “I worked crazily to get my body back. I wanted to show my body! I wanted to show that you can have a child and you can work hard and you can get your body back.”
Beyonce gave birth to Blue Ivy Carter four years ago. The little one is the singer and her husband’s only child. Beyonce and Jay-Z will ring in their daughter’s fifth birthday in January.
