Yara Shahidi enjoyed a relaxing weekend that was filled with singing and camaraderie. The ‘Black-ish’ star hosted a private event at Call It Spring that was held at the Staples Center and cheered for Selena Gomez at her concert.
Yara rocked denim suspenders and pumps. The young star thanked Call It Spring and Selena for putting on a fantastic show in the midst of social unrest. “Smiles before Selena,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you @callitspring for a nice little break amidst a crazy sociopolitical week #revivalconcert.”
Shahidi was one of several stars to speak out against social injustices that have plagued the nation for centuries last week. The young star shared video footage of the late James Baldwin sharing his sentiments on race and was in complete agreement with the author. “Especially relevant point made by #JamesBaldwin in light of tonight’s events and in light of the events that have occurred since the conception of race #altonsterling,” she captioned under one video clip.
Yara and the cast of ‘Black-ish’ have not shied away from the subject of race. It was just last year that the show addressed the N-word. “I feel like what Black-ish has done is make it easier to have a conversation about some things,” Yara said during an interview with Parade.
Co-star Laurence Fishburne also chimed in telling media, “It’s that old saying, ‘Laughter is the best medicine. We’ve got a little bit of medicine in our cabinets, you know? And we’re just giving it to people in a way in which they can see it. I love what I do, and I’m just so happy that we have been embraced and that our audience is as diverse as our country is.”
The season finale of ‘Black-ish’ aired in May. The show will enter its third season this fall.
