“I get worried about him having a connection, maybe, with law enforcement that may not be trained to understand these kids who don’t know social cues,” Holly said. Rodney was diagnosed with autism at the age of three and is progressively learning how to navigate in society independent of mom and dad. “We drill him on what to do in those situations,” Holly said of her preparations. “We keep it real.… We’ve even gone so far as to take him to the local police department just to introduce him.”

Holly has been a strong advocate for autism ever since her son’s diagnosis went public. Perhaps the actress will also become a supporter of better relations between law enforcement and the general public. “I think it’s very important that law enforcement understands all kinds of issues — special needs, depression, bipolar disorder, all kinds of things that our kids are suffering with so that they can police better,” she shared with Huff Post Live. “When you know better, you do better.”

Holly and husband Rodney Peete Sr. have four kids together. You can see the family of six in their reality series, For Peete’s Sake, every week OWN.
