Gabrielle Union says consistency is key when parenting bonus children. The star tells Us Weekly that her experience as a stepmom to her husband Dwyane Wade’s sons has been pleasant because of her decision to practice uniformity when rearing.
“I recognize that I am lucky,” she says. “My advice [to other step parents] is just to be fair, reasonable and consistent. If you’re going to be a pushover, be a pushover. If you’re going to be a disciplinarian, be a disciplinarian. But be consistent so that [the kids] can get used to whoever it is that you are.”
Gabrielle told media shortly after marrying Dwyane that her aim was not to be another stringent parent. “I think there’s always a transition period,” she shared. “If you’re going to be a good, reasonable, normal person, they get use to that. And you just have to be another adult in their life that supports them and loves them. And don’t ever think that you’re going to replace any of their parents. You just love them.”
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade tied the matrimonial knot on August 30, 2014. Dwyane’s sons, Zion and Zaire, are his kids with his first wife, Siohvaughn Funches.
