Yara Shahidi didn’t let New York Fashion Week end without stopping by one of the shows. The ‘Black-ish’ star attended the DKNY Women’s Fall 2016 fashion show at Skylight Modern on Wednesday. She looked beautiful in black and rocked a naturally curly hairstyle. Yara debuted purple highlights that were subtle yet noticeable.
Shahidi is one of several to be featured on the Dazed 100 list. Her standing as an actress and activist leads the way as she shares her goals to bring about changes in entertainment and society as a whole. “We are in the middle of a ‘representation renaissance’, so to speak,” Shahidi says. “It’s through shows such as Black-ish, American Crime, Jane the Virgin and Transparent that we are seeing and hearing the complex and multifaceted voices of our world.”
The young star further explains, “My main challenge is constantly asking questions [of] and being in conversation with those ‘in charge’ about keeping roles for women and POC multifaceted and representative of our true nature. It’s more than making characters that are flawless superheroes, but embracing the true power of characters that are unabashedly human in both their victories and errors.”
