If you saw the national showing of ‘The Wiz Live!’ last night, then you saw 19-year-old Shanice Williams in all of her singing and acting glory. The newcomer made her television debut alongside Queen Latifah, Common and a host of other veterans.
Shanice starred as Dorothy in the beloved story, which was a role that she didn’t initially audition for. “I was too scared to audition for Dorothy,” shares the young star. “[My grandmother] wanted me to try for Dorothy. She taught me, ‘Never be shy. If someone asks you to perform, do it!'”
Williams certainly performed during the showing. Queen Latifah raves about the teen telling E! News, “She is amazing. This kid is unbelievable. So talented and so sweet, down to earth, and she is nailing it. I really just see her as Dorothy now. She has reeled me in…I’m there.”
Alison Dooley, Shanice’s high school theater teacher, also comments on the teen’s success. “There was no doubt in my mind she’d be successful. I was just surprised at how soon it came for her!”
