Spike Lee’s controversial film “Chi-Raq” made its world premiere Sunday night at the Chicago theatre in Chicago. Stars of the film, including Jennifer Hudson, Wesley Snipes and Nick Cannon, walked the orange carpet as did Spike’s wife and kids.
The film, which opens in theaters nationwide on Dec. 4, has sparked controversy since news broke earlier this year that Lee planned to call it “Chi-Raq.” Some people worried that the film would depict Chicago in an unfavorable light:
The movie, which touches on police shootings of young, black men, no-snitch culture, absentee fathers and unrelenting poverty, comes as the city braces for protests related to the expected release in coming days of a controversial video of a white Chicago police officer firing 16 rounds into African-American teenager Laquan McDonald and weeks after Tyshawn Lee, 9, was fatally shot in a South Side alley(Source).
Lee and wife Tonya are parents to son Jackson and daughter Satchel.
