Everything that Erykah Badu says is always so deep. The singer and proud mother recently shared a few pictures of her kids in their Halloween costumes, and gave her reasoning behind not celebrating the holiday until they were older.
“I’m just an observer,” shared Badu. “When Seven was about 5, I was heavy into African Studies, Pagan Ritual research, World Religion and Sociology.” As a result of her findings through research, Erykah determined that she would not celebrate any holiday for the mere sport of things. “I felt that participating in holiday rituals, or anything, for that matter, without an understanding of their origins or meanings was kinda fruitless. So I didn’t celebrate holidays as an adult.”
Erykah’s lack of festiveness, however, came to an end one Halloween when Seven inquired about costumes. “One day in OCTOBER after learning about the holiday from commercials, Seven asked me, ‘Mama, what YOU gone be for HOLLOWEEN?'” Although Badu explained to her son that Halloween is not a holiday that she hailed, the celebrity mom’s son didn’t take the negative response to heart. “Well I guess I can help u get your look together then,” said Erykah to her son who decided to be Jimmy Hendrix that year. “I figured I could share with him what I had learned about the holiday later.” However, “later never came.”
Now, Erykah celebrates holidays such as Halloween for the pleasure of seeing her kids’ faces light up. “After all the politics and paganism and scientific methods are considered … His smile weighed more to me than my ‘concepts,'” explained the celebrity mom on Facebook this past Sunday. “Awe … The beauty of seeing things from the eyes of a 5 year old.”
