Rachel Roy is a bit older and wiser. The 41-year-old tells Haute Living that her life revolves more around her family and less around her brand now that she resides in Los Angeles with her kids.
“[Moving] was the hardest decision I ever made in my life, and as soon as I did it, the universe just blessed me,” says the star. “Everything happens for a reason.”
Roy goes deeper into her life as a working mom, which is currently more focused on family affairs and less on her brand. “I’ve put in my time. I grind; I work really hard,” shares the star of her career as a fashion designer. “My work ethic is still there, but this is the time in my life when I need to put my kids first. Now that that stress has been eliminated, I’m a better mother, a better friend, and a better co-worker.”
Although Roy is currently at a place where she is confident in who she is and able to better prioritize her life, the star admits that such was not always the case. “You couldn’t pay me a million dollars—maybe a billion—to relive my twenties… I wouldn’t want to,” explains the star. “It wasn’t a time of knowledge for me. I was sleepwalking. I wasn’t aware that happiness comes through making the decision to be happy. I was designing the life that I wanted, but it was in such slow motion that I didn’t realize until my mid-thirties what it meant to have responsibility.”
Now, with better knowledge of the concept of accountability, Rachel can teach her daughters and other women the importance of independence. “My big thing is work,” says the star. “If we [as women] can work, we can take care of ourselves. We’re not looking for a handout. We can have self-respect. In many countries, employment is not an option. Freedom, for me, comes through working.”
Rachel Roy has two kids, Tallulah and Ava, with ex-husband Damon Dash.
