Kerry Washington has been speaking quite candidly lately about the difficulties of shooting the last season of Scandal while she was pregnant. She revealed that her changing body became an obstacle in portraying Olivia Pope. She told The Hollywood Reporter:
All of last season was a challenge for me, on a few levels. For one thing, I was going through this amazing physical transition, this physical journey of having a baby, that my character was not going through. And I work very physically. What I do is often grounded in the body. That meant I had to figure out how to be this woman while my instrument was changing and evolving every day. It was like seeing the keys on a piano jump around on a daily basis. It was tough for me to even maintain Olivia’s walk because of the changes.
Moreover, the actress admitted that her character’s changing storyline became overwhelming as well. Kerry said that she prefers to be in control, and know exactly what to expect, but that she didn’t have those liberties during the third season. As a silver lining though, she added “that meant my acting toolbox had to be upgraded”, which seems like a valuable opportunity.
The season was indeed wrought with twists and turns, which meant the short season left viewers eager for more. Olivia Pope and Associates return this fall, though, and this time, they’ll even be able to show Kerry’s lower half again.
In order to conceal her pregnancy, Kerry was forced to be mindful of how and where she was positioned on set, to help the camera avoid showing too much. Absurd shots placed Kerry behind lamps and other furniture, oversized jackets and purses were worn faithfully, and she even cozied up with pillows more often than one might expect.
The star gave birth to her daughter, Amarachi, in April. Although everyone is excited and happy for her and her husband, Nnamdi Asomugha, viewers are likely to be thrilled to get their show back to normal.
As for Kerry, her next challenging adventure will have to be being a working mommy!
