What’s it like to claim a child that isn’t yours? Idris Elba knows. The actor recently sat down with GQ magazine to talk about his experience of gushing over a little boy who turned out to be fathered by another man.

The year was 2010, and Idris was dating a woman out of Florida. The young lady became pregnant and gave birth to a boy during her and Elba’s courtship, and the actor just assumed that the child was his. Idris told family, friends, and media about his son before discovering that the precious little one belonged to another. “The celebration of having a son—from a man’s perspective, it’s massive,” Idris told GQ. “To be given that and then have it taken away so harshly was like taking a full-on punch in the face: POW.”
Although knocked down, Elba refused to be knocked out. The actor learned to move on from the incident and decided to share his story with the world. “You know, the truth is—like, even admitting it, I’ll probably get laughed at for the rest of my life. But it is just tragic, and it happened,” explained the star. I wasn’t knocked out…and I ain’t aiming to take another punch in the face ever again.”
Idris has a daughter named Isan who resides in Atlanta, Georgia. The actor splits his time between Atlanta and London.
