LaNiyah Bailey is a 7-year-old author and anti-bully advocate who recently released a children’s book about obesity. While Bailey has published other books pertaining to bullying and its effects, the young author is passionate about her obesity project because she suffers from the disorder.
LaNiyah began to gain an excessive amount of weight at the tender age of three. Conscious of medical risks associated with obesity, Bailey’s parents sought professional counsel and placed their daughter on a strict 1800-calorie diet. The parents knew that something was wrong when LaNiyah continued to gain weight. Now over 100 pounds, Bailey is classified as one of those rare cases of weight gain not being related to diet.
The victim of ridicule, LaNiyah and her mother decided to write about Bailey’s experience with obesity. The book, entitled Not Fat Because I Wanna Be,” explores the social and psychological effects of bullying because of obesity. As LaNiyah explains, “I want people to learn that bullying isn’t cool to do to other people.”
