Sheinelle Jones is encouraging parents to be mindful of the way they talk about their bodies around their children.
During a recent episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, the television host explained that she tries to model a healthy attitude toward body image because she knows her 14-year-old daughter, Clara, is paying attention.
“You know how you look in the mirror, and you go, ‘Ugh, I feel so fat today?’ Or, ‘Oh, my cheeks!’ ” Jones said. “Our daughters — and guys, boys too — are listening and watching.”
The mom of three said she’s noticed just how much Clara picks up from her, from the way they dress to the little habits they share.
“I noticed that she takes on a lot of my mannerisms. We even dress the same, or we wear headbands,” Jones said. “And so it goes to show even when you’re not saying it, they’re watching our behavior.”
Jones explained that realization has changed the way she speaks about herself. Rather than criticizing the reflection she sees in the mirror, she wants her daughter to see someone who appreciates what her body has done for her.
“The way I want her to live is how I’m trying to live, right?” she said. “So I don’t want to look in the mirror and disparage the body that’s kept me healthy.”
Jones shares Clara, twin brother Uche Jr., and their older brother Kayin with her late husband, Uche Ojeh, who died in May 2025 at age 45 after being diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Earlier this month, the Today co-host celebrated Clara and Uche Jr.’s 14th birthday with an Instagram tribute. Looking back on family photos spanning more than a decade, Jones reflected on the memories she and Ojeh created with their children and expressed gratitude for being their mother.
“14 years ago today … our lives were forever changed. A two for one special!” she wrote before recalling moments from the twins’ baby dedication, preschool graduation, and other milestones. She ended the post by writing, “I am so thankful to be their mom … All 3 of my children will always be my babies … no matter how big they get! Happy Birthday Clara & Uche! Love you!”
