Kehlani is opening up about where things stand with her daughter’s father, Javaughn Young-White.
During a recent visit to The Breakfast Club, the singer shared that she and her ex are no longer in contact and that she now has full custody of their daughter, Adeya Nomi.
The update comes after a tense period last year. In July 2024, Young-White sought full physical and legal custody of the then five-year-old.
He alleged in court documents that Kehlani was involved in what he described as a “cult” and claimed their daughter’s environment wasn’t safe.
Kehlani, in return, denied the claims and accused Young-White of physical and emotional abuse, setting off a highly public dispute.
Speaking to the hosts of The Breakfast Club, she said the most difficult part was seeing her daughter pulled into the conversation as claims spread online.
“I can bear anything attached to my name. It might hurt. I might throw a little bit of a fit about it, but I’m an adult. I can bear that,” she said. “When you see your child’s name attached to these things, your child’s photo next to certain words and certain verbiage and certain things, that’s a bit of a heartbreaker.”
Throughout the legal process, Kehlani said she relied heavily on her faith. “God protect me and God protect my child. Like really, God shield my child,” she recalled.
She also prayed that the situation would not follow Adeya as she grows older. “God, may this not follow her when she’s older because I can bear it and I can deal with it because I’ve been through a lot.”
Kehlani told the hosts that many of the statements fueling online discussion did not hold up in court.
.
“Ultimately the claims were false. It wasn’t true. He backtracked a lot,” she said. “A lot was discovered. A lot came out in certain documents of whatever the court case XYZ and a lot of it just got refuted.”
Despite the turmoil, the Grammy nominee said her focus never shifted from taking care of Adeya. She explained that she walked her daughter through what court meant and what visitation was. “She was very understanding and she’s moved through it and we’ve taken it day by day,” Kehlani shared.
