Machine Gun Kelly, also known as Colson Baker, recently shared how his 15-year-old daughter, Casie, played a crucial role in his decision to get sober.
During an appearance on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast on August 18, the 34-year-old rapper recalled a conversation with Casie that took place when she was just 11 or 12 years old that changed his life.
“It started with my daughter saying, ‘Dad, you know I can tell when you’re high?’ It broke my heart,” Kelly said on the podcast. “It was the ultimate let down.”
The moment became a turning point for Kelly. He recognized that as a father, he needed to set a better example and break the cycle of substance abuse that had plagued his own upbringing.
“It took me a while afterward, because obviously drugs have a vice grip on you,” he continued. “That was step one for me. As a father and as a man, to be the father I wish my dad would have been, I have to break this generational curse for my kid.”
Earlier this month, Kelly marked a significant achievement—one year of sobriety. During an appearance on Bunnie Xo’s podcast, “Dumb Blonde,” he revealed that he is now “completely sober from everything.”
“I don’t drink anymore. I haven’t drank since last August,” he added. “That was my first time I ever went to rehab.”
Kelly recently celebrated Casie’s 15th birthday in July. The proud dad posted a sweet tribute on Instagram, featuring a photo of the two posing under a giant pink heart-shaped balloon arch.
He captioned, “The world spins but when I look at you it stops. Happy 15th princess.”
