Disney Jr. always seems to nail their new series debuts for younger viewers. And of course, Kindergarten: The Musical is no exception. Kindergarten: The Musical is a must-see for both parents and kids!
According to Parents.com, Kindergarten: The Musical follows 5-year-old Berti and her classmates as they start kindergarten and make sense of all their new experiences. That includes making friends, listening to the teacher, working as a team, and problem-solving—all with big, over-the-top Broadway-style songs and dance numbers.
Two of Kindergarten: The Musical creators/executive producers, Charlton Pettus, and Michelle Lewis, took time out of their busy schedules to fill the experts at Parents.com in on an exclusive look behind the motivation for the upcoming series.
Lewis and Pettus, who are both songwriters, start of with their exclusive look at the new show by sharing that they were inspired by the way that anything kindergarten related can actually be turned into a song. If you think about it, how many songs are there about cleaning up, brushing your teeth, tying your shoes, taking a bath, etc.
“That’s what songwriters do—we write situational songs. And so what better situation than kindergarten?” Lewis explained in the interview.
Pettus agreed, saying that big events, like starting kindergarten, can be easier to help children understand if it is done through song. “Most big emotions are fairly inarticulate in the real world, but the beauty of musicalizing them is you get to have the characters really say what they really feel and really think.”
Pettus continues in the interview, stressing the fact that for those who are entering the “big kid” world of kindergarten, everything is “monumental”. So, what better way to show that than by using musical theater.
“Everything that happens in kindergarten is so monumental. Musical theater is the way to show that. How else can you express these massive emotional outpourings?”
Pettus also says that he hopes that it gives kids and their parents to be over the top and ridiculous. “We’re de-shaming absolutely ridiculous behavior.”
Lewis chimes in stating that Kindergarten: The Musical will let the world know that it is “funny and normal to sing about everything.”
You will unquestionably hear some familiar voices on this upcoming show. Berti’s teacher, Ms. Moreno, will be voiced by Suits actress Gina Torres.
Are you ready to sing and dance along with the kindergartners in Ms. Moreno’s class? Well, we know that we are! Kindergarten: The Musical will take center stage on Disney Jr. on September 3!
