Sidney sat down for an exclusive interview to talk finding family with the Williams sisters drama, King Richard. Take a look at some of the things she had to say below to Gold Derby.
Sidney on becoming a family with castmates.
We just felt so comfortable on set and we became a family. We became the Williams family. It felt real. It felt like we were in a fairy tale in a book. We were just these amazing people. It was my intent every day to bring my best and 100 percent for Mr. Will. What I love about him is that he was like, let’s be better than yesterday. I stepped up to the net with him and left it all on the court, no pun intended.
Sidney on a pivotal moment in the film where her character Venus Williams thinks her father doesn’t believe in her.
That was such an evolution for Venus at that point of the story. That was like, ‘Saniyya, how would you feel if your mom or dad was like you can’t do this anymore, and the thing you loved so much was stripped away from you.’ That was what helped me channel that mostly.
Sidney on scene work with Will Smith in relation to that pivotal scene.
We were both just Richard and Venus, balling and crying. But each time we were doing it we got more and more into it. We were like, ‘Yeah, it’s definitely time to challenge each other right now.’ We would bring out different emotions in each other, that was what was so beautiful about that scene.
