Phaedra Parks is addressing the issue of race in America. The reality star shares the challenges associated with rearing African American sons in a nation such as the United States in an interview with the Huffington Post.
“Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (representing Florida’s 24th District) and I talk about this all the time; when is the point that your cute and handsome little boy goes from being just that to being a predator or having people afraid of them because of their skin tone,” Phaedra asks. “That is a hard conversation that we have to have in the United States,” she admits.
While Parks acknowledges that her sons, Ayden and Dylan, have special perks as children of celebrity parents, she often wonders what life is like for African-American boys who do not have the privilege of wealth and notoriety on their side.
“If I go into a store and I am not dressed in a certain way and people don’t know who I am, I will be followed,” Phaedra reveals. “I am a very affluent person; if it can happen to me, I can only imagine what happens to the young boy with the hoodie. The young boy that walks onto the wrong side of town innocently and is looked upon as doing something criminal or is a predator.”
Phaedra Parks is the proud mother of two children named Ayden and Dylan. Both of the boys celebrate their birthdays in May. Dylan turns 4-years-old while Ayden celebrates his seventh birthday this year.
