August is National Breastfeeding Month and Melanie Fiona is celebrating in a big way. The singer shared a photo of her and her son, Cameron, bonding during nursing time.
“As a first time mom, I am proud to be a part of the celebration and acknowledgment of #WorldBreastFeedingWeek,” Melanie told Instagram fans. “For some strange reason… This topic… this action…this natural magic of a woman’s body comes with so much controversy and debate,” she continued. “No woman should have to apologize or sacrifice the necessity to feed her child, whenever and wherever she can, to cater to the discomfort of others.”

Fiona went on to tells fans, “Most women who breastfeed in public are not even thinking about you or anything else at that time, other than satisfying the hunger of her little one. If this was back in the day (pre-formula) you would’ve either fed from the tit of another woman or died, if your mother couldn’t breastfeed. Think about that!”
The recording artist welcomed her son earlier this year. Cameron was born on March 14, 2016, and Melanie expressed gratitude in becoming a mom. “I am so thankful to have been present for every moment thus far, and I promise to never take any of our moments together for granted,” she said one month after giving birth.

The celebrity parent has since become a sort of advocate for new moms. Her recent open letter about breastfeeding in public testifies of her thirst for equality. “I feel blessed to be bonded with my child through breastfeeding, and support every mother’s choice for how they choose to feed their child,” she said. “To the mamas who commit to breastfeeding… Despite the odds, the struggles, the pain, and the judgment… I Congratulate & Celebrate You.
