Yesterday, September 11, Alicia Keys appeared on The Tonight Show where she debuted her new protest song, “We Are Here.”
The song, which will be featured on her upcoming album, is a direct attempt to begin a dialogue between cultures about everything from conflicts in Israel, gun violence, and more. In his introduction to the song, Jimmy Fallon pointed out that the songstress hoped that viewers would take to social media to post #WeAreHere, explaining whatever concerns they wish to voice. After announcing that his own #WeAReHere includes letting his audience forget about their problems for an hour, Jimmy gave us over to Alicia and her powerful song.
Behind her piano, the wall read thought-provoking words such as “war” “freedom” and “education.” The protest song is far from Alicia’s first effort to fight injustice. As an active philanthropist, the mother of one is the co-founder of the non-profit organization, Keep A Child Alive. The foundation provides medicine to those afflicted by HIV and AIDS in Africa. In 2008, her work was recognized in the documentary Alicia in Africa: Journey to the Motherland.
Moreover, she has publicly supported a number of other charities including Frum Tha Ground Up, and the project “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide”.
