D’Angelo’s children took the stage at the 2026 BET Awards to pay tribute to their late father in one of the night’s most emotional moments.
Imani Archer, Michael “Swayvo” Archer Jr., and Morocco Archer appeared before the audience to introduce a musical tribute celebrating his life and legacy.
“To the world, he was D’Angelo. To us, he was just Dad,” Imani said as the siblings reflected on the man they knew beyond the spotlight.
Morocco remembered his father as their “biggest hype man and protector” before sharing one of the things that brought him the greatest joy.
“One of the things that brought our father the most joy was performing with his band, The Vanguard,” he said.

Swayvo then welcomed the artists assembled to celebrate his father’s legacy.
“So, it’s only right that they’re here with us along with some other special guests to honor the man who meant the whole world to us,” he said. “So, Pops, this one’s for you. Let’s do it!”
The tribute featured members of The Vanguard alongside RAYE, Ari Lennox, George Clinton, BJ the Chicago Kid, and Durand Bernarr, who performed a medley of D’Angelo’s biggest hits.
D’Angelo died in October 2025 at the age of 51 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” a family spokesperson said in a statement announcing his passing. “After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today.”
The statement continued, “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all to join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”
