When you are a celebrity/athlete off-spring, it may seem to those on the outside looking in that the parents may try to guide or steer their children towards following the same path. However, for many celebrities/athletes, that is just not the case. For Carmelo and Kiyan Anthony, that is definitely not the case. The 17-year-old recently spoke with ESPN and set the record straight saying that his dad, “never pushes me to follow in his footsteps.”
“[My father] never pushes me to go to Syracuse just because his name is on the gym,” Kiyan told the outlet. “He did so much at Syracuse. He knows that I’m my own person. I’ve just got to make my own decision at the end of the day.โ
Kiyan added, โIf it is Syracuse โ I go there a lot and I practice, I work out there โ if it is that, that’s what it is. But he’s never going to say, ‘You got to go to Syracuse. You got to go there because I went there.’ He’s not going to make me follow in his footsteps unless I really want to.”
As we know, the talented young athlete is in the midst of deciding where he will spend the four years after high school. Kiyan has had several phenomenal offers from 21 schools and has narrowed his choices down to six: his fatherโs alma mater, Syracuse, Ohio State, Auburn, Florida, Rutgers, and University of Southern California, (USC).
Kiyan said in his interview that the “whole world” wants him at his father’s alma mater, but he is taking the time to decide and research what campus and basketball program is right for him.
โEven though I know basically the whole world wants me to go to Syracuse, I still haven’t made the decision yet,โ he said. โI will rely on my parents a lot with their advice and how they think a school fits me.”
The world is unquestionably watching and waiting to see where Kiyan will call home. Carmelo Anthony shares son Kiyan with ex-wife, La La Anthony.
