“Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being 🤍 #BabyGrinerComingSoon #July2024,” they shared alongside a snapshot of themselves holding hands next to an ultrasound image of their little one.

The expectant parents celebrated the impending arrival of their baby with a “we can bearly wait” themed baby shower over the weekend, surrounded by their closest family and friends. In photos from the private gathering, Cherelle proudly showcased her growing baby bump while posing alongside her partner.

The couple’s journey to parenthood hasn’t been without its challenges, notably Brittney’s harrowing ordeal in Russia in February 2022. After being detained for drug charges due to the discovery of cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport, the WNBA star spent nearly 300 days in custody before her eventual release in December 2022, thanks to diplomatic efforts and a prisoner swap involving Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

Reflecting on the turbulent time, Cherelle shared with PEOPLE the overwhelming relief she felt upon learning that her wife was finally heading home after months of uncertainty.

“I had thought about that moment a thousand times, and I thought I would be full of tears,” she told PEOPLE at the time. “But I was overwhelmingly happy. It was the first time I was able to finally exhale, and I’m like, ‘Oh, thank God, this is such a great day.’ ”

Brittney and Cherelle first met over a decade ago during their time at Baylor University from 2009 to 2013. They got engaged in June 2019, with the duo tying the knot nearly a year later.
