The conversation took on a more heartwarming turn when Jennifer Hudson turned her attention to Monica’s 16-year-old son, Romelo, sitting in the audience.

“What’s it like hanging out with your mom?” Hudson inquired, sparking a heartfelt response from Romelo.

“It’s great hanging with my mom. She has a very inspiring story like she left home when she was young and I feel like I kind of relate to it a lot so I like coming with my mom to these things a lot,” Romelo shared.

Romelo Hill isn’t just any teenager; he’s a rising star in the basketball world. Hill is making waves as a point guard for RWE in the Overtime Elite basketball league. The Overtime Elite basketball league offers young talents aged 16 to 20 a unique platform to pursue their dreams of a professional basketball career, with options to turn pro or pursue college.

Monica explained, “He’s actually my youngest son. I have three sons.. and he’s 16. It’s really interesting because he attends a Basketball Academy called OTE League. It’s amazing because it preps them for college and the league.

She continued, “So it’s still very much a place where academics are important, but he was here for work as well. So him resonating with me leaving home so early it’s really happening in his life as well because they travel as a team and they compete at a completely different level than you’ll ever see at at a high school.”

As a basketball mom, Monica’s support for Romelo goes beyond just cheering from the sidelines.

“I’m not the ref’s favorite but I’m definitely the team’s favorite because I’m for all of the boys. I’m the rest of the boys Auntie, but I’m his mama, so when Melo hits the floor it’s ‘let’s go Melo let’s go,'” she said.

Romeli chimed in, “She’s very loud I could I could hear her fromanywhere on the court I be having to tell her like after game like quiet down, like just chill.”
