Angela Bassett had the support of husband Courtney B. Vance and their kids Slater Josiah Vance and Bronwyn Golden Vance as she receuved an Honorary Oscar Award at the 14th Annual Governors Awards on January 9, 2024.
At the event, Bassett was honored for her decades-long contributions to the film industry, recognizing her as a beloved figure in Hollywood.
During her acceptance speech, the actress expressed gratitude to her sister D’nette, her devoted husband, and their 17-year-old twins, acknowledging the pivotal role they played in her journey.
“They have each, in their own way, made space in our lives to allow me the freedom to be a sister, a mother, a wife and and actor,” she said of their support. “I love you wholly and deeply.”
Angela Bassett also paid tribute to “the women who shower me with heavenly love,” including her late mother Betty and aunt Golden.
Delving into the history of Black actresses in Hollywood, Angela recognized the progress made while acknowledging the challenges that persist. As only the second Black actress to receive an Honorary Academy Award, she paid homage to fellow Black actresses “who are makers of history in our industry.”
“To my fellow Black actresses, fill your hearts with courage and strength, because regardless of what you may think or see or feel, your contributions do matter,” Bassett said.
Having received two Academy Award nominations for her roles in “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Bassett spoke to “Good Morning America” on the red carpet before receiving her honorary Oscar, sharing her thoughts on the significance of the award.
“I hope it doesn’t mean the end,” Bassett told “GMA,” breaking out in a laugh. “You know? Like, of all the things that it can mean, it can’t mean that.”
