According to Columbia pediatrician David Buchholz, MD, there is no known safe amount of caffeine for anyone age 11 and younger. However, Amber Rose would disagree. The model, rapper, and television personality, said in a recent interview that “it’s not a big deal” that she lets her children drink coffee.
On the No Jumper Podcast, the 34-year-old mother talked to the hosts about some adult behaviors that children shouldn’t engage in, including drinking coffee.
“I give my kids coffee,” Rose said on the podcast episode.
The mother-of-two continued, “Slash is 4, and he drinks coffee all the time,” she said that he drinks it “every day.” Rose also said that her children drink “Coke and root beer,” which are both caffeinated drinks.
Yet, we all know, that when it comes to these types of drinks, size does matter, in terms of caffeine intake. In other words, the bigger the size, the more caffeine is ingested. Rose confirmed that both children drink out of an adult-size cup.
To put things into perspective, according to Healthline.com, “The caffeine content of brewed coffee at Starbucks is as follows (8, 9): Short (8 oz): 180 mg. Tall (12 oz): 260 mg. Grande (16 oz): 330 mg.”
Per John Hopkins Medicine, the following daily intake of caffeine for children are as follows: Ages 4 – 6: 45 mgs (about a half cup of coffee) Ages 7 – 9: 62.5 mgs. Ages 10 – 12: 85 mgs.
Despite these guidelines, Amber Rose defends her choices by emphasizing the bonding experience, saying, “Me and my kids sit, and we drink coffee, and we talk. It’s not a big deal. It’s really not. My 4-year-old will wake up and be like, ‘I want coffee and breakfast. It’s only caffeine. It’s a little caffeine. It’s not bad for you.”
Amber Rose shares her 10-year-old son, Sebastian “Bash” Thomaz, with ex-husband Wiz Khalifa, and her 4-year-old son, Slash Electric Alexander, with ex-boyfriend Alexander “AE” Edwards.
