Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are celebrating their daughter Kaavia James’ 5th birthday today.
“BIG 5!!!! Happy Birthday to our PRINCESS @kaaviajames. Your village loves them some you!” Wade shared on Instagram.
To commemorate the special day, the couple threw a princess themed birthay party for their little princess over the weekend. The trio, dressed in enchanting royal attire, reveled in the magical celebration.
Union and her husband, Dwyane Wade, welcomed Kaavia James into their lives via surrogate on November 7, 2018, when she was 46 and Wade was 36.
In a recent Instagram video, the actress addressed a question she frequently encounters—whether it’s “worth it” to have kids later in life. While she wishes she had become a mother earlier in life, she says “hell yeah, it’s been worth it”.
“But for me, I became a mom at the right time because I was healed and I had committed to healing eternally so I didn’t pass all that generational trauma on to Kaav,” she continued. “Had I been a day younger, even certainly 10, 15, 20 years before, I would have passed along way too many traumatic things to my child.”
In a previous interview with Today Parents, the working mom opened up about her struggles with infertility and journey to surrogacy. She emphasized her contentment in overcoming her fear of public scrutiny regarding not carrying her child herself.
“It’s OK to bring your child into the world in a way that is not through your body,” she explained. “The world will not consider you a failure. Every route to parenthood is perfect, worthwhile and amazing.”
In addition to Kaavia, Gabrielle Union is also stepmother to Wade’s three children from previous relationships.
Wade shares son Zaire, 21, and daughter Zaya, 16, with his ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches. He also shares son Xavier, 9, with “Basketball Wives” star Aja Metoyer. The former NBA star is also the legal guardian of his nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.
