Tristan Thompson has filed for guardianship of his younger brother Amari, seeking to become the 17-year-old’s sole legal guardian.
Upon his mother Andrea’s death in January of this year, as a result of a heart attack, Thompson has been the sole caregiver for the minor.
In court documents obtained by People Magazine, the 32-year-old stated that their father, Trevor Thompson, has not been a part of his brother’s life since 2014. The Los Angeles Lakers free agent said that he is the only closest living relative that can properly care for the disabled teen.
“Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment,” the court documents stated.
The documents continued to read, “Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs. Further, Amari is set to receive a modest inheritance from his recently deceased mother and a guardian wouldn’t be able to manage and invest in Amari’s inheritance on his behalf.”
Amari has received $103,475 from his mother’s estate. If appointed guardian, Thompson would be able to invest and manage the teens inheritance. Thompson would also be able to apply for Amari’s U.S. citizenship as he was born in Canada.
In terms of Amari’s health issues, he has epilepsy and other medical conditions that require around-the-clock support. If appointed guardian, Thompson would also be able to continue managing his health care and doctor’s appointments. Currently, Amari is living with Thompson in his Hidden Hills, California estate.
Khloe Kardashian, Tristan Thompson’s ex, and her family have been very supportive of the NBA star and his brother. Upon Thompson’s mother’s death, the Kardashians all flew to Canada to be with Tristan and Amari in their time of need.
Kardashian also said, on an episode of her hit Hulu television series, The Kardashians, that, “[Tatum] likes Amari. They like each other.”
Recently, Thompson and Amari temporarily lived with the Good American co-founder as a result of issues with his roof due to poor weather conditions.
Kardashian and Thompson share five-year-old True Thompson and one-year-old Tatum Thompson.
