Parenting is unquestionably hard. It truly takes a village to help raise children in today’s society. The newest addition to the NBA Hall of Fame, Dwyane Wade is offering parents his number one parenting tip, and it’s a good one!
So, just what is Wade’s parenting tip? Well, in a recent interview with CNBC Make It, he revealed that the one thing that he strives to ensure is that he…”just show[s] up” for his children.
“I just try to show up. Whatever that looks like for you (because) all of our lives are different,” Wade told CNBC Make It.
He continued, “I have a very hectic and busy life, a very public life and all of these things (I do). But I try to make sure I show up for everybody and my kids. I show up in moments that I know are important to them.”
Wade shares two children, 21-year-old Zaire and 16-year-old Zaya with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches. The retired Miami Heat basketball player also shares nine-year-old Xavier with Aja Metoyer. And, four-year-old Kaavia James with wife, Gabrielle Union.
In his interview, Wade continues stating that, like every parent, he has his good parenting moments and not so good parenting moments, but stresses that “showing up” for his children’s critical moments takes priority and definitely takes on many other forms than just being present physically.
“I think I have my good moments (and) I have my not so good moments, like all parents. I show up by listening sometimes. Just shutting my mouth, taking a drive.”
He went to to conclude, “Showing up is half the battle. If I just show up and sit around Zaya for a couple of hours, she gon’ tell me everything I need to know. Because you’re there and you’re present, and it’s important.”
On August 12, the retired NBA champion was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2023. Wade retired from professional basketball in 2019.
