Aretha Franklin’s family received justice in court last week as a judge ruled a handwritten will found in a couch was valid. The late singer’s granddaughter, Grace Franklin, took to Instagram to celebrate the decision.

“I was only 12 when my grandmother passed away,” the teen shared with her social media fans last Tuesday (Jul. 11). “A rising 7th grader who had no idea what or how her life was supposed to continue from that point on,” Grace shared. “I had faith that those around my family had our best interest at heart, as any child would,” she continued. “Until they didn’t.”
Aretha Franklin’s estate has been a battle among her children since her death in 2018. It was assumed that the singer did not have a will to divide her assets, which are estimated to be worth $6 million. A family member found a will that dated back to 2014. Some members of the Franklin bunch painted the declaration as invalid.

“A whirlwind of lies, mismanagement and manipulation transformed an already scary situation for a middle schooler (sic) into a nightmare I felt was never ending,” Grace said of the experience. “We all felt it,” she added. “We all just wanted what my grandma wanted to be done in the wake of her passing.”
The battle between Aretha Franklin’s family members has been intense for years. “I’m 17 now,” Grace told her social media fans. “I’m about to graduate high school and start an entirely new stage of life,” the teen added.

“[I can] finally begin a new chapter where my grandma’s soul can rest in peace with the fact that her last wishes were honored,” the youngster declared. “It’s hard to believe I went through a global pandemic before I could see justice prevail for my grandmother,” Grace reflected. “But God did it,” she told her fans. “And I’m forever grateful.”
