Zaya Wade went to the winter formal dance at her school this past weekend. The teen had the support of her family before and after the event.
Zaya took several pictures with her loved ones before heading off to the dance. One candid featured the teen’s father, Dwyane Wade, along with Zaya’s stepmother, Gabrielle Union, and younger sister, Kaavia James.
“Supporting each other for life’s big moments is key,” Gabrielle and Dwyane said of them sending Zaya off to winter formal. “All the nerves, all the anxiety, all the fear … With loved ones by your side, no matter the challenge, we 10 toes down,” the celebrity couple shared. “Always,” Gabrielle and Dwyane added.
Life for Gabrielle Union has changed dramatically since becoming a mom. The actress recently spoke with Scary Mommy about her efforts to relate to Zaya.
“I try to remember my teen years so I can relate better to Zaya,” Gabrielle shared with the press. “Just trying to think back on what worked in me and my mom’s relationship and what didn’t,” she continued.
“When I get nervous that Zaya’s in her room too long, or she’s not sharing, I’m like, ‘Lady, you didn’t share sh*t. And you weren’t plotting a world takeover,” Union said of the balancing act that gives Zaya enough personal space. “It’s okay to give them space,” Union shared.
“What I wish my mom did do was check in a little bit more,” she explained. “I mean, the police weren’t coming and no one was pregnant, but there’s a lot of sh*t in between,” Union shared. “Now watching my mom, who turns 75 next month, trying to learn how to get into somebody’s DMs, what an eggplant emoji is … I’ve watched her evolve and be humble that she doesn’t have the answer,” Gabrielle told the press.
“I understand her more now,” the actress revealed. “I like her more now,” Gabrielle said of her relationship with her mom. “I mean, I’ve always loved her, but I love her in a completely different way. I get it now. And I don’t know how she did not fight me in the street.”
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade parent three kids together. Dwyane has four kids in all.
