TYLER PERRY IS PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE’S GODFATHER

"Honored"

Tyler Perry is godfather to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. The revelation came during the final episode of the six-part docuseries, Harry and Meghan currently streaming on Netflix.

Tyler and Meghan first became acquainted after he wrote a letter to her empathizing with the abuse she suffered at the hands of the press, her family, and the Royal Family. “I couldn’t even imagine this woman finding the man that she loved, the man of her dreams, and him being a prince, and then to walk into all of that madness and need the security of family and then have your father do some horrible things,” Perry shared during a segment of the docuseries.

“When my life changed and success started to come, family members became different people, and I know how hurtful and horrible it can be,” the entertainment mogul said regarding Meghan Markle’s estranged father openly criticizing his daughter. “To tell Meghan that I felt her feelings were valid, [that] hurt,” Tyler said. “I didn’t want to have to say that to her — I didn’t want her to feel that,” he added. “But I didn’t want to lie to her. She was afraid of them destroying her, or going crazy, or them making her think she was crazy.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the establishment in the United Kingdom in 2020. The celebrity couple moved to California where Tyler Perry offered them a home in which they could live for as long as they needed. Prince Harry and Meghan’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was a one-year-old at the time. The celebrity parents welcomed their daughter in June 2021 and immediately thought to ask Tyler Perry to be Lilibet’s godfather.

“[They] were pretty serious on the phone,” Perry recalled during his segment of the Netflix docuseries. “I go, ‘OK, what’s going on?’ They said, ‘Well, we’d like for you to be Lili’s godfather.’ I go, ‘Whoa.’ I had to take a minute to take that in,” the 53-year-old director shares. “And I thought, ‘I’d be honored. I’d absolutely be honored.’”
