Sy’Rai Smith is aiming to continue her mom Brandy’s legacy in the way of songwriting and performing. The young adult recently sat down with Togethxr to discuss her evolving artistry.
“I started discovering my voice very young, very, very young,” Sy’Rai shared with the media source. “One day I played [Brandy’s] song in my CD player and she didn’t even know I had a CD of hers. She just came in my room and started crying,” Smith said of her mom’s reaction.
“And I was like, ‘What is wrong with you?’ She was like, ‘This is everything to me. All I’ve heard is Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga, and Justin Beiber.’ She didn’t even know I knew all of her songs,” Sy’Rai shared with Togethxr. “All of them,” the young adult added. “She was like, ‘What is going on? She knows all these songs.’ Yeah, like, I am a real big fan of my mom. [I have been] listening since two days old.”
Sy’Rai has been listening to her mom’s songs since a young age. She didn’t always know about Brandy’s fame, though. “I was walking and a bunch of people were taking pictures, and I was so confused. I was like, ‘Why are they taking pictures of us?’ I used to never understand why people would want to see my mom,” Smith revealed. “I go to school maybe like two days later. I was just like, ‘Do people take pictures of your mom, too?’ And [the other kids] were like, ‘No.’ So I asked her and she was like, ‘People know me because I perform and sing.’ And so I started to understand the concept the more I got older.”
Now, Sy’Rai has a better understanding of what her mom does and desires to follow in Brandy’s steps. “She’s let me grow and fulfill my purpose in the studio and songwriting,” Sy’Rai shared of her mom’s support during her recent interview with Togethxr. “She trusts me to bring out a good product at the end of the day. I think I’m doing a pretty good job. I think when people hear my music, they’ll be pretty surprised.”
Sy’Rai Smith has enjoyed several sessions in the studio over the past few months. Fans can expect to see her release music in the future.
