Kim Kardashian is not trying to appropriate anyone’s culture. The celebrity mom recently addressed allegations of Blackfishing during a recent interview with i-D magazine.
“Obviously, I would never do anything to appropriate any culture,” Kim shared with the media source. “But I have in the past got backlash from putting my hair in braids and I understand that,” the celebrity mom added.
“Honestly, a lot of the time it comes from my daughter asking us to do matching hair,” Kim said of her recent hairstyles that match her oldest daughter North West’s style. “And I’ve had these conversations with her that are like, ‘Hey, maybe this hairstyle would be better on you and not on me.’ But I also want her to feel that I can do a hairstyle with her and not make it that big of a deal either if that’s something that she’s really asking for, and really wants.”
“But I’ve learned and grown over the years and figured out good ways to communicate with all my kids about all this. I’ve definitely learned over time, and I’ve tried to pass that culture of learning onto my kids too, but then there’s also a history of braiding hair in Armenia, and people forget that I am Armenian as well.”
Kim Kardashian has been the subject of Blackfishing accusations for years. Critics blasted the celebrity a few years ago for wearing makeup that appeared to feature her with darker skin. The scrutiny became even more intense after she wore braids that many associated with African-American culture. North West also rocked the hairstyle but did not receive the same backlash as her mother.
“My daughter actually loves braids, like this last time I wore [them], she helps me pick out a look and will show me pictures,” Kim shared with i-D. “I just think if it comes from a place of love and you’re using it as cultural inspiration, then I think it is okay,” Kardashian added.
“Sometimes I think maybe if you don’t communicate where you got the inspiration from — and I’ve done that in the past — then people might not understand it,” Kim further explained during her recent interview with i-D. “But yeah, I think as long as it comes from a place of love and you’re getting inspired, then it is okay.”
North West is Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s oldest child. The celebrities have four kids – North, Psalm, Saint, and Chicago – in all.
