Meditation has helped Alicia Keys in a number of ways. The recording artist tells USA Today readers how the practice transformed her life as a mother and wife.
“My consistent spiritual practice began about six years ago, after I gave birth to my son Genesis,” Alicia shares in an op-ed piece. “Like so many new moms I was exhausted, but the depletion was more than physiological; my spirit was shot. I needed to do something so I could continue to be a good mother to my children, partner to my husband, and friend to myself.”
A friend introduced Keys to Kundalini meditation. The spiritual practice revolves around the notion of energy resting in the base of the spine waiting to be awakened through meditation, chants, and singing. Kundalini energy is believed to bring healing by restoring Divine Feminine energy in the body.
Alicia Keys did not feel a significant difference after her first meditation session. In fact, the recording artist fell asleep during the segment. “But the second time, I felt a little spark,” Keys tells USA Today readers.
“I really liked the mixture of chanting, singing, and movement,” the singer reveals. “Between the chanting and the singing and the rhythm and the meaning of these ancient words, I discovered a sense of peace and comfort. I started to notice a richer connection with myself, an ability to go deeper. After years of silence, I could hear myself, trust my instincts, know what I wanted, know what I needed and not feel so insecure.”
The new feeling gave Alicia confidence she had not previously experienced. “I became a better mother because I was more confident in myself,” the singer explains. “I could hear what I needed and what my family needed,” Keys added.
“Same with my relationships with my husband, my mother, and definitely my work,” Keys continued. “Now I could be crystal clear, powerful and strong and not back down because I had a way to access my own intuition. I had made a genuine connection with the Divine Feminine.”
