Meghan Markle is getting into children’s publishing. The Duchess of Sussex plans to release her first children’s book, The Bench, next month.
“The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born,” Markle says of her inspiration to write a children’s book. “That poem became this story,” the celebrity mom said.
“Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life,” the Duchess of Sussex shares of her illustrator, Christian Robinson, who worked to tell the celebrity’s story by way of pictures.
“This representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens,” Markle declares. “My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, in 2019. The youngster made the Duch and Duchess of Sussex parents for the first time.
“Meghan’s touching text explores the relationship between fathers and sons and undeniably tugs at the heartstrings that parents and caregivers feel,” Mallory Loehr, EVP and publisher for Random House Books for Young Readers Group, shares in a statement. “Christian’s art beautifully matches the tender emotion of Meghan’s words, and every spread is infused with a vibrant sense of joy and love,” the publisher adds.
“The Bench is timeless,” Loehr further dotes. “It feels destined to become one of those books that people will be reading for generations to come.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting their second child, a girl, to arrive later this year. The Duch and Duchess of Sussex celebrate their son’s second birthday this Thursday (May 6).
