Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade’s daughter, Kaavia, has a new hairdo. The youngster is rocking braids, thanks to Wankaya H. and her mom’s hair care brand, Flawless by Gabrielle Union.
Kaavia, also known as Shady Baby, typically rocks an afro. Her mom and dad, however, thought it good to change things up a bit with a braided style.
“Can’t tell me NUTHIN,” the caption underneath one of Kaavia’s pictures that showed off her new hairstyle read. “New Hair Alert,” Shady Baby hashtagged.
“Yes, queen,” one social media follower wrote in response to the candids. “Keep that crown high.” Another of Kaavia’s Instagram fans said, “Braids and beads are a rite of passage for all little Black girls.”
Hair is more than strands to Gabrielle Union. The L.A.’s Finest actress views her tresses as a supernatural power. “I’ve been on this natural hair journey for many years,” Union recently said of her decision to leave relaxers and embrace her natural curl pattern. “It’s just been a long journey of loving myself and the hair that grows out of my head,” the celebrity explained.
“When [my hair] really just became supernatural, [that’s when] I found joy in it. Not ‘I’m going to tame or battle or whatever with my hair,’ but ‘I’m going to love and nourish my hair.’ That’s been the last two years, girl. But now that I’m in, the water is warm. I’m like, ‘Y’all, I don’t know what I’ve been waiting for!'”
Gabrielle’s quest to love her hair has led her to rear Kaavia in a manner that encourages the youngster to embrace natural hairstyles. “[Growing up] I remember there being fear and anxiety about being burned [by relaxer] or my braids being too tight,” Gabrielle said during a recent interview with ALLURE. “Luckily, moving into the natural hair world absolves a lot of that fear [for Kaavia],” the celebrity mom shared.
“It’s more relaxing,” Union added. “We’re trying not to make it such a thing for her to have to look a very specific way, for her to be ‘appropriate’ or ‘acceptable.’ We put some curl cream in and let her curls do what they do.”
Kaavia James is Gabrielle Union and Dwyane’s only child together. The celebrity couple parents four kids in all.
