Basketball Wives star Shaunie O’Neal has a great relationship with Shaq. The celebrity mom tells Tamron Hall of The Tamron Hall Show how she co-parents with her former spouse.
“We have a great co-parenting relationship, seriously,” Shaunie tells Tamron. “It took us a long time to get there,” the celebrity mom admitted. “It was not an easy journey, but once we got there, and I think we felt comfortable being honest with each other and just sharing what was going on in our lives, in our personal lives to a certain extent.”
Shaunie O’Neal and Shaq went through a challenging time with their son, Shareef O’Neal, who underwent heart surgery in 2018. Shareef took several months off from playing basketball after his operation to recover and spend quality time with his family.
“This is definitely the hardest thing we’ve ever had to face in our lives,” Shaunie said during an episode of Basketball Wives in which viewers got a snippet of what Shareef endured on his road to recovery after heart surgery. The celebrity mom went on to tell viewers that her son “could’ve died” as a result of his heart condition.
Shaq was a strong support base for his son throughout the process. Now, the celebrity father looks towards establishing relationships outside of co-parenting with his ex-wife.
“It’s none of my business what he does, same with him,” Shaunie tells Tamron. “And I think we both respect that,” the celebrity mom adds. “But if we get in relationships that we’re going to go to that next level, we definitely will let each other know … and support it in the best way we can.”
Shaunie O’Neal and Shaq co-parent five kids – Shareef, Myles, Amirah, Shaqir, and Me’arah – together. You can catch Shaunie and her kids navigating life every week on Basketball Wives, which airs on VH1.
