Eddie Murphy’s real-life daughter, Bella Murphy, stars as his daughter in the upcoming film, Coming 2 America. The rising actress is one of Murphy’s three daughters on-screen.
Bella, starring as Omma in the film, aggressively pursued the role. “She had to audition,” Bella’s mom, Nicole Murphy, said during an interview with Wendy Williams in 2019. “It wasn’t like, ‘Daddy, give me the role,'” Murphy added. “She had to actually get out there.”
The Coming 2 America trailer reveals family dynamics and cultural differences for viewers to enjoy. Akeem (Eddie Murphy) learns that he has a long lost son in America who is around 30-years-old. The African king makes it his priority to travel back to the United States to inform his son, Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler), of his royalty and heir to the throne. At first, Lavelle and his mom, Mary (Leslie Jones), reject the notion of traveling to Africa to bond and connect with the rest of Akeem’s family. The notion of becoming king, however, is one that progressively grows on Lavell throughout the film.
Eddie Murphy discussed his forthcoming film, which is the sequel to Coming To America (1988), during a 2019 interview with Ellen DeGeneres.
“I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out,” Murphy told DeGeneres. “A lot of people have this expectation, like people would say to me when they found out I was doing it, ‘Don’t f— that movie up.’ So we’ve gone above and beyond what anybody would think. I’m really, really happy with it.”
Coming 2 America was scheduled to release in December 2020. Coronavirus restrictions, however, impeded the film’s debut.
Still, even with the delay, fans are excited to see what Eddie Murphy has created to follow his classic 1988 film. Even those who were born after Coming To America’s release are waiting in great anticipation for the sequel.
